Lunchroom close contact COVID-19 case at VSY

Team,

A new positive case of COVID-19 has been reported at Vancouver Shipyards. The individual last worked on the day shift on Friday, November 20. After experiencing symptoms over the weekend, they immediately went for a COVID-19 test which came back positive. They are currently experiencing minor symptoms and isolating at home, and we wish them well in their recovery.

Our Wellness team were also immediately informed of the positive test result and conducted our internal contact tracing process. Although the individual had observed all protocols with regard to mask wearing and physical distancing while carrying out their work, they were in close contact, as defined by public health, with another employee while in the lunchroom when neither were wearing masks. That employee has been informed and is self-isolating as a precaution until public health makes a determination.  The lunchroom is cleaned several times a day.

As we know, the single most important thing we can do to avoid transmission is to keep at least two metres (six feet) between ourselves and others. A secondary line of defence is to wear a mask. Clearly mask wearing is difficult when eating and drinking and we are especially vulnerable at these times if we are close to other people without masks.  This is when physical distancing is so vital to our safety and to reduce the spread of the virus. I urge you to consider your distance to others while your mask is removed to eat or drink.

We were fortunate to be able to respond swiftly to this case, thanks to the individual’s prompt actions. If you are experiencing any symptoms of illness or feeling unwell, stay home, advise your supervisor and seek appropriate medical attention. If you are concerned or have any questions, please contact Tina Craig, Manager of Seaspan Wellness (w: 604-990-3316; c: 778-874-4438; e: wellness@seaspan.com).

Thank you for staying safe and staying vigilant.
