Seaspan Energy continues to celebrate milestones in the Port of Vancouver as the first company in Canada to provide ship-to-ship LNG bunkering. On March 1 in English Bay, the Seaspan Garibaldi successfully completed a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at anchor to Lake Herman, an LNG-powered car carrier operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) out of Japan.
“We are proud to share in this milestone with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) as Lake Herman is the first car carrier to be fueled by a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering in Western North America,” said Harly Penner, President, Seaspan Energy. “We appreciate the trust from our customer and look forward to a long-lasting relationship.”
“Until now, there was no LNG fuel supply base in Western North America, and the deployment of LNG-fueled vessels was limited. We are very pleased that we have succeeded in the first LNG bunkering for a car carrier in Western North America in collaboration with Seaspan Energy, which will expand the range of areas where we can deploy environmentally friendly LNG-fueled vessels and provide customers with more options for expanding their clean supply chains,” said Yoshikazu Urushitani, General Manager, Marine Fuel GX Division, MOL. “We will continue to conduct LNG bunkering based on the Ship-to-Ship basis to LNG-fuels vessels at other ports in Western North America.”
With additional ship-to-ship bunkering operations set to take place in the Vancouver Harbour to tankers, car carriers, cruise ships, and containerships, the global marine industry has started to embrace LNG as a transitional marine fuel. Seaspan Energy is proud to support this transition by offering a low-carbon alternative fuel source to ship owners out of the Port of Vancouver.
