Seaspan is proud to celebrate 15 years of partnership with Green Marine, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement across our shipyards and marine operations.
Green Marine is a leading environmental certification program that helps participants across the North American marine industry reduce their environmental impacts through the adoption of new technology and best practices. Focusing on a wide range of environmental issues relevant to the marine industry, Green Marine tracks participants based on key performance indicators including pollution prevention, waste management, community impacts, underwater noise, and more.

In 2024 Seaspan Shipyards was ranked the top performing shipyard out of the 24 participating in the program, and Seaspan Marine has consistently scored amongst the top 5% of all North American fleet owners.
“From leadership to the shop floor, everyone is working together to make changes that are positively impacting the environmental footprint of our operations.” John McCarthy, CEO of Seaspan Shipyards, said. “We’re proud of the progress we’ve made over the last 15 years and remain focused on advancing innovations that support the health of our oceans, communities, and future generations.”
Since joining the program in 2010, Seaspan has demonstrated leadership by adopting practices that go beyond minimum regulatory compliance, continually demonstrating high ratings when it comes to pollution prevention, waste management, and reducing our carbon footprint.

“Participating in Green Marine aligns with our core values and long-term vision for a cleaner, more sustainable marine industry,” Jordan Pechie, President of Seaspan Marine Transportation, said.
As the first West Coast shipyard and ship owner to join Green Marine, we have embraced a proactive approach to environmental stewardship. As we commit to continuing our efforts, we are also reflecting on some of the recent environmental initiatives that have led up to this milestone, including:
- Partnering with local stakeholders to restore habitat at MacKay Creek Estuary
- Investing in LED lighting and energy efficient technology in collaboration with BC Hydro. Since 2023 these measures have resulted in energy savings across our shipyards of 1,500,0000 kWh per year across our shipyards
- Making the switch to fully electric shuttle buses at our Pemberton campus.
- Partnering with the Haisla Nation to deploy the world’s first fully electric tugboat fleet in Kitimat, B.C
- Demonstrating leadership in sustainability across our fleets, including Seaspan Ferries and tugboat vessels, by connecting to shore power and using alternative fuels and technologies like battery-electric power.
“Seaspan has set a powerful example as an early adopter and steadfast leader within the Green Marine program. Over 15 years, their dedication to continual improvement—going well beyond regulatory requirements—demonstrates how ambition and transparency can drive environmental excellence. Seaspan has consistently raised the bar, innovating not just to meet evolving Green Marine criteria, but to help shape them.” David Bolduc, President and CEO of Green Marine International, said.
