Charis Chan is one of 18 new and returning students who make up Seaspan’s fall Intern cohort. After her first full week on the job, she shares how things are going so far, and what drives her to succeed. Read on to learn more about Charis and her role here at Seaspan.
What is your role, and how was your first week at Seaspan?
- As a Supply Chain Intern, I support Seaspan’s Corporate Supply Chain team, reporting to Bob Chernin and working closely with Ricardo Diaz and his team. In my first week, I focused on learning more about Seaspan as an organization and getting to know everyone. I feel fortunate that everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.
How did you feel when you found out that you had been offered the job?
- If I had to choose one word – excited! I was surprised to hear back so quickly, just the next day after my second interview. I’m looking forward to working for such a large organization.
What are you interested in learning while you’re here?
- I want to see first-hand how the supply chain team fits into the organization and I’m also quite curious to learn more about the marine industry and gain new perspectives.
What school do you go to?
- Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where I am a fourth-year co-op student. I am working towards my Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Operations and Logistics.
What is the most exciting part of your university experience?
- There are two things that really drive me – curiosity and meeting new people.
Through co-op, I had the opportunity to work as a Merchandise Planning Intern at Aritzia this past summer. It was a great experience and a chance to see what I’m learning in school off the page.
- I’m also the co-president of the UBC Supply Chain and Operations Association, which is a club led by students in my department. Getting to know other students is my favourite part of being involved, along with the sense of community. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved in the Operations and Logistics specialization because there are so many opportunities to learn, both firsthand in the workplace and from other students.
Where are you headed next?
- My concentration is in International Business. As part of that program, I’ll be going on exchange in February 2023 to the University of Melbourne in Australia, which is something I’m really looking forward to. In the meantime, my aim is to further develop the skills I’ve learned in the classroom and bring the new insight I learn from my experience at Seaspan back with me.
