Ringing in the new year brings excitement for what is to come for the year ahead, such as onboarding a new cohort of interns at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards. This Winter term, 20 interns representing varied disciplines, ranging all the way from outfit engineering to human resources and everything in between, have joined us at Seaspan. With their first month having sailed by already, let’s meet the next generation of marine industry leaders.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I currently attend the University of British Columbia as part of the Sauder School of Business. At UBC I am pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in Global Supply Chain and Logistics Management.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I am hoping to build new relationships with my team and others in the organization while learning more about the complex supply chain process that go into making/repairing ships at Seaspan!”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I’m a fourth-year mechanical engineering student at UBC, and I am interning in the field of mechanical engineering. I was born in Calgary, but I have lived in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Louisiana, Texas, California, and Australia before finally settling in BC. In my free time, I love playing tennis, longboarding, and listening to music.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I want to learn more about all the mechanical systems that work behind the scenes to keep a ship running smoothly. In my time a Seaspan, I am also hoping to grow my communication skills, become proficient with new software, and discover if shipbuilding is the field I want to pursue after university.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am from Peru. Married, mother of Rodrigo. Psychologist with master’s in human resources. Currently enrolled in a post-graduate Business diploma with a concentration in Human Resources at Capilano University.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I hope to gain valuable professional development experience, apply the skills I have developed in my past roles and classes, and work with HR leaders and peers to further grow my skills for my future career in Human Resources.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I go to UBC Okanagan studying Electrical Engineering.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I hope to gain more practical knowledge of software development and how to pull all threads together to design system architecture. Additionally, I want to tap into different domains like electrical engineering, 3D modeling, and data science to broaden my horizons.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am a 3rd-year student attending Simon Fraser University studying communications and business administration. I am the communications intern for both the internal and external communications team at Seaspan.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I hope to learn the diverse ways communication materials can be created and shared with growing internal and external audiences, while gaining more knowledge about the shipbuilding industry.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am a recent graduate from the University of St. Andrews where I studied Social Anthropology. I have been the JSS PMO intern since the end of July 2022!”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I am hoping to learn more about how large projects are managed and delivered, as well as what it takes to rebuild an industry and manage the challenges that come along with that.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I’m from Brazil, where I graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. After working there for a few years, I decided to pursue my old dream of living in Canada. So, I came to Vancouver to study International Business Management at Greystone College where I got the chance to complement my studies on a different approach, focusing on managerial techniques.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I’m looking forward to learning everything I can about the Marine industry, especially in the Integrated Logistics Support area that seems to be very challenging but crucial to the operational success of the projects. Besides that, I’m looking forward to meeting new people and making connections in the workplace.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “In the summer, I will be heading into my fourth year of Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria with a goal to specialize in Structural Engineering. In my spare time, I knit, canoe, swim, and draw.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “With previous work in submarine repair, I am interested in learning more about shipbuilding, especially the design process, design intent, and the estimation side of shipbuilding. I am very interested to go ‘back to the start’ to see how ships are designed and made to serve their design purpose, prevent future failures and to overall see the contrast between the repair side and build side of the marine industry.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Fraser Valley and am currently pursuing a Post Baccalaureate in Computer Science at Simon Fraser University. In my free time, I enjoy playing with my dog, watching movies, and doing sudoku puzzles!”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “During this internship I am hoping that I will expand my knowledge on data analytics and data software. I want to further analyze and relate this quantitative work to business processes. I am excited to work alongside the HSEQ team and learn many valuable skills and knowledge from their expertise! I am also looking forward to the opportunity of applying my academic knowledge and bringing a unique set of skills to the team.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am pursuing my Masters in Global Management at Royal Roads University.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I hope this internship provides me with the opportunity to hone my quality management skills. Being an international student, I am also keen to learn how to communicate and build relationships with people from different cultures.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am a 4th-year Geomatics Engineering student from the University of Calgary. I’m currently starting my second internship at Seaspan as a 3D Visualization intern on the innovation team. Last term, my main responsibility was the HoloShip immersive VR facility, while this term my focus is shifted on assisting with innovation team projects such as Digital Ship.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
“This term, I hope to take what I’ve learned so far and apply myself to best assist with Innovation team projects, as well as continue developing professional connections, communication skills, and time management skills that I can carry forward in my career.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I am a second year Engineering Physics student at UBC!”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
“I hope to learn how each department and separate part of a company/project development group contributes their individual skill set and expertise to contribute to the greater picture.”
Tell us a bit about yourself:
- “I go to UBC studying Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Aerospace. Aside from school, my hobbies include designing and building RC aircrafts, swimming, hiking, playing the trumpet, badminton, and cooking.”
What are you hoping to take away from your InternSHIP at Seaspan?
- “I want to learn about the work that goes into such a massive engineering project such as shipbuilding and contribute to Seaspan’s projects using my skills. I’m hoping to leave this internship as a better engineer and with some new friends in my network.”
