Meet Seaspan’s Summer 2023 Interns

Last month, Seaspan welcomed a record-breaking cohort of 35 new and returning summer interns coming from various disciplinary backgrounds. From Human Resources to Outfitting Engineering, each one of them is taking on unique projects during their internship. Read more to get to know a few of our Summer 2023 interns:

Iain Gudmundson, Barge Operations and Maintenance Intern

​​​​​​​About me: I am a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Victoria. In my spare time, you can find me camping or riding/fixing my motorbike and bicycle.

What are you most excited about for your internship? I am looking forward to getting on some barges and applying my skillset to keep operations running smoothly. I am also excited about building on my ship construction experience and finding opportunities to increase operational efficiency.

What is your favorite song? How We Do by 50 Cent

 

Victor Pham, Facilities Intern

​​​​​​​About me: I completed my third year of environmental engineering at the University of British Columbia and will be working a year of internships through the co-op program before completing my last year of engineering. Outside of school and work, I spend a lot of time with my engineering design team, playing tennis, and trying out new restaurants.

What are you most excited about for your internship? I am excited to connect with interns from around the world and to apply my skills to real-world projects. I am eager to dive into the complexities of large-scale project management, especially the art of balancing various stakeholders’ interests. Overall, I am excited to get an experience how large companies collaborate dynamically to hit their targets.

Harsha Gidwani, Human Resources Intern

About me: I am currently a fourth-year international student from Nairobi, Kenya studying Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources and Marketing at Simon Fraser University. When I’m not busy with my studies or work, you can find me exploring the city for good food, doing graphic design/painting, swimming, and travelling.

What are you most excited about for your internship? I am most excited about the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the HR field and learn about the inner workings of a dynamic organization like Seaspan. I am looking forward to working closely with the HR team and contributing to the overall success of the department.

Tim Lui, Risk Management and Intellectual Property Intern​​​​​​​

About me: I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting at British Columbia Institute of Technology. Fun fact, I was an extra in a TV show and I had to eat a sandwich in the background.

What are you most excited about for your internship? Being able to learn a completely new industry and profession. My previous experience mostly lies within audit and compliance, so my current position at Seaspan is able to provide me with a fresh perspective while still allowing me to employ prior skills and knowledge.

Natasya Grisella, Communications Intern

About me: I am currently a fourth-year international student from Indonesia studying Film Studies and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Outside of work and school, I enjoy doing photography, gardening, and cooking.

What are you most excited about for your internship? To dive into the shipbuilding industry! Coming from a creative arts background, the world of engineering and science is still relatively new for me. I am excited to challenge myself to think out of the box to capture Seaspan’s unique stories.

Colette Beauvais, Outfitting Intern

​​​​​​​About me: This fall, I will be going into my fifth (and final!) year at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. I’m currently completing my undergrad in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace Engineering. Outside of school, I enjoy being a part of the McGill Tennis Team and the Promoting Opportunities for Women in Engineering club. I grew up in North Vancouver and love to come home every summer for all of BC’s amazing hiking, swimming, and scuba diving.

What are you most excited about for your internship? I am most excited about being immersed in the marine industry and discovering all the different areas of work that go into shipbuilding. I am looking forward to collaborating with new people and learning from their diverse experiences and backgrounds.

Liam McGregor, Naval Architecture Intern

​​​​​​​About me: I attend Memorial University of Newfoundland; I am currently in my third year working on completing my undergraduate degree in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. When I am outside of work I enjoy hiking, swimming, curling, and baking.

What are you most excited about for your internship? I am looking forward to working with my team, improving my collaboration skills, and getting to know everyone!
