HaiSea Marine tugboats escort Canada’s first global LNG export

July 14, 2025

HaiSea Marine tugboats were at the ready to escort the GasLog Glasgow tanker as it set out from LNG Canada in Kitimat, B.C. carrying the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be exported from Canada.

The LNG shipment represents a pivotal moment for the Canadian energy sector, with distribution of Canadian natural gas historically limited to pipelines within Canada and to the U.S. Now, Canada has the opportunity expand its exports to other parts of the world via LNG tankers, including to Asia — an opportunity that HaiSea Marine is excited to be a part of.

Based in Kitimat, in the traditional territory of the Haisla nation, LNG Canada is Canada’s first large-scale LNG export facility, paving the way for future projects like it.

“It was an honour for HaiSea Marine to escort the very first carrier to call at LNG Canada’s new export facility for loading. This was a monumental occasion that has been years in the making for HaiSea Marine and LNG Canada,” Jordan Pechie, President, Seaspan Marine Transportation said. “With the facility now up and running, we are fulfilling HaiSea Marine’s original dream — having Haisla mariners working on their home waters and doing so onboard some of the most environmentally friendly tugboats in the world.”

HaiSea Marine is a joint venture with Seaspan, majority owned by the Haisla Nation. In April, the full HaiSea fleet of battery-powered and low emissions tugboats had the opportunity to work together on another successful first when they escorted the first LNG carrier up the Douglas Channel, to prepare for last week’s milestone. This was no simple feat, with the total journey to LNG Canada’s marine terminal jetty totalling more than 130 nautical miles.

With our innovative fleet of vessels, HaiSea Marine is proud to provide harbour and escort tugboat services for LNG Canada as they embark on a journey to deliver Canadian LNG to new markets across the globe.
