June 13, 2023 – Victoria, BC – Seaspan Victoria Shipyards (Seaspan) officially delivered HMCS Regina back to the Royal Canadian Navy on May 19, 2023, marking the first full Docking Work Period to be completed under the shipyard’s Halifax-Class Work Period (HCWP) contract to maintain and modernize Canada’s West Coast-based Halifax-class frigates.
The vessel arrived at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards in the fall of 2021. Over the course of the last 19 months, more than 500 trades personnel and salaried staff from Victoria Shipyards worked diligently to complete this project on time and on budget.
HMCS Regina received a wide range of engineering upgrades, equipment installations, preventative and corrective maintenance, and critical dry-docking activities, all in support of the Royal Canadian Navy’s goal of ensuring the frigates remain operationally available and relevant through to the end of their service life.
HMCS Regina has now been transferred to the Navy’s Fleet Maintenance Facility in Victoria, BC, where their staff will continue to reactivate the vessel’s systems and prepare it for future deployment.
Today’s milestone builds on Seaspan Victoria Shipyards’ exemplary record as a partner to the Royal Canadian Navy on past Halifax-class modernization efforts. The second West Coast Halifax-Class frigate to undergo a Docking Work Period is HMCS Calgary, which arrived at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards in early 2023.
Work done at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards is conducted out of the federally-owned Esquimalt Graving Dock.
