Ottawa, ON – Over 50 representatives of current and potential suppliers attended Seaspan Shipyards’ (Seaspan) annual Industry Day hosted in Ottawa and received a progress update on the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and the opportunities associated with Non-Combat package of vessels being constructed at Vancouver Shipyards.

“The work completed to date by Seaspan Shipyards under the National Shipbuilding Strategy is rebuilding Canada’s shipbuilding industry,” said Brian Carter, President & CEO – Seaspan Shipyards. “Not only are we delivering on our commitment to supply the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy with purpose-built vessels that meet their needs, we are also establishing a sustainable Canadian supply chain for the long-term.”

As part of its NSS commitments, Seaspan has to date, engaged nearly 500 Canadian suppliers and assigned approximately $600 million in committed contracts. The majority of these are with small- and medium-sized businesses. In all, Canadian suppliers make up more than 90 per cent of Seaspan’s NSS-supply chain.

“We anticipate more opportunities in the future for our suppliers as Seaspan continues to make progress on its NSS-related commitments,” noted Ian Brennan, Vice President of New Construction, Supply Chain Management & Contacts – Vancouver Shipyards. “Events such as the one today help us build new relationships and expand our supply chain across Canada.”

Last year, Seaspan launched the first large ship to have been designed and built under the NSS. At its purpose-built new construction yard in North Vancouver, the company continues to make progress with the second and third Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels currently under construction. In addition to the ongoing construction work, Seaspan has design and engineering work underway for the Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel and the Joint Support Ships.
