Fund will provide Canadian companies with growth capital, shipbuilding expertise and pathways to market.
Oct. 19, 2026 — Vancouver — Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards (Seaspan) today announced the creation of a corporate venture capital (CVC) fund to invest in Canadian small and medium-sized businesses developing technologies for defence, marine and dual-use applications. The fund will pair minority equity investments with Seaspan’s industry expertise to accelerate commercialization and support Canada’s shipbuilding and defence priorities.
The fund complements Seaspan’s recently signed MOU partnership with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) which also intends to support Canadian companies through a pilot program providing capital and mentorship advice.
Seaspan will provide growth capital to selected portfolio companies, along with industry access and mentorship. The fund will help Canadian businesses scale their technologies, integrate into the shipbuilding supply chain and pursue domestic and international markets.
The fund builds on the Venture Capital Fund provisions of Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) Policy and Seaspan’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) Value Proposition obligations. It will support Seaspan’s industrial participation commitments under the NSS. Seaspan will source, evaluate and manage investments directly, aligning capital deployment with industry needs while maintaining applicable government reporting, verification and oversight. The model is designed to keep intellectual property, capabilities and high-value jobs in Canada.
The Seaspan CVC fund will:
- Accelerate the commercialization and adoption of Canadian technologies;
- Provide portfolio companies with strategic capital, industry access and mentorship;
- Support the domestic development of critical marine and defence capabilities;
- Align investments with the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy capability, industrial and supply chain priorities; and
- Maintain government reporting, verification, audit and oversight requirements.
Managed from Seaspan’s North Vancouver headquarters, the fund will support innovative Canadian companies developing technologies relevant to Canada, while strengthening Canada’s sovereign industrial base.
